SERS substrates

Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is a method to increase Raman intensity by orders of magnitude, overcoming the traditional drawback of Raman scattering – its inherent weakness. The amplification factors can be as high as 1014 – 15, which is sufficient to enable even the detection of a single molecule with Raman. Measurement applications, where the current sensitivity/speed of a Raman measurement is not sufficient, become possible with SERS.

Via Integrated Optics we offer SERS substrates manufactured by their partner AtoID, which stand for unmatched finishing and versatility. These substrates are manufactured using a patented femtosecond laser nanofabrication technique that produces a stochastic self-formed nanostructure for wavelengths from <100 nm to >1µm. They are 8 times more sensitive than the current gold standard available on the market and also convince with their low price.

The active area of the standard products is 3 x 5 mm. The coating is made in gold or silver. SERS substrates with a different size of the active area can be offered on request.
Due to the electrical conductivity of the active area, the molecules can be polarized with positive and negative charge and therefore can be brought closer to the substrate. The surface resistance is approx. 1 Ohm/nm.

The substrate consists of stable silicate glass and is therefore particularly suitable for chemical industry and medical diagnostics. With 12.5 x 5 x 1 mm the total size is about one third of a regular microscope slide. All substrates are separately vacuum packed in microcentrifuge tubes in a clean room environment. No adhesives or other chemical substances are used in the production process. Form factor and packaging are ideal for immersion and analysis of liquid (buffered) samples.
