Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) with UWAVE’s UV LEDs
There are various approaches to non-destructive testing (NDT). At Mountain Photonics, we frequently support such testing with photonic solutions, such as imaging systems using multispectral or hyperspectral techniques, spectroscopic methods, or surface analysis via interferometry.
The use of high-performance UV LEDs enables yet another method: dye penetrant testing.
To inspect a component for the finest cracks or damage, a fluorescent dye is applied over a large area of the component and then removed. The dye remains trapped in cracks or other defects. The bright fluorescence makes it possible to determine, either with the naked eye or using detectors, whether the component is damaged or still intact.
In the automotive and aerospace industries in particular, there are a large number of such components whose reliable performance is critical to safety. Other examples can be found in pipelines and reactors.
